So it would seem it’s turning out to be collaboration month! First Things first, yesterday we hit a Cowboy record of 19 views! DIALED. If we keep that up we’ll be bigger then that Paris Hilton Guy in like 3 months. Lets beat 19 roughnecks.

Anyway, today I’d like to talk about a most solid and rememberable collaboration. Steven King, the posterboy of literary horror, and mentor to R.L. Stine (I made that up.) Is no stranger to pictures (movies.) By 1985 having written stories Creepshow, the Dead Zone, Children of the Corn, and Cujo, all adapted into films, Steven had a thirst for something new. And so he set out to Direct his first feature, Maximum Overdrive. The following is a 1985 transcript I found under my futon of Steven Kings first meeting with the Executive Producer, Kevin.

Producer: Alright Mr. King it’s a pleasure to see you again, how was the flight?

Steven King: Let’s get to the movie Kevin I’ve got big plans.

Producer: Right. So who is to Direct Maximum Over Drive?
(The producer brought his pen to is mouth inquisitively)

Steven King: Thats the thing Kevin. I will direct this one.
(Steven winked at Kevin, but accidently closed both eyes and looked weird.)

Producer: Thats splendid Steven. You’ve certainly had enough experience with your last film. Plus we think this is just what the Steven King fans have been waiting for.

Steven King: There’s just one thing I need.

Producer: Oh don’t worry we’ll have the Best DP out there and Assistant Director for anything you need Steven
Steven King: Not that.
Producer: What then sir.

Steven stares at Producer Kevin for at least 2 minets of silence. Clocks ticking as Kevin begins to sweat, he pulls out his hankerchief to wipe sweat from his brow. Only breaking eye contact with Steven Once to look at the picture of his children on his desk. When he thinks he can’t take it any more Steven Speaks.

Steven King: AC/DC

Producer: who?

Steven King: Hello?!?! Hells Bells?! Guitar Hero 2?!?

Producer: I’m sorry, I don’t know what Guitar Hero is.

Steven King: Pshhh, you will.

Producer: Ok, We’ll get em.

And so you have it. For those of you who don’t know, Maximum Overdrive, for lack of a better phrase, FUCKING RULES. When referring to it, I usually always say, Maximum Over Drive: The AC/DC Movie. Although they are not in the film, they do the entire soundtrack. They also have a AC/DC van getting smashed in the beginning.

Personally I fall in love with film and music collaborations more then anything. A band doing an entire soundtrack can usually turn out pretty well. However when movies are written around albums, that is MAGIC. Don’t bring up any of that Beatles stuff though. The best example of this would of course be True Stories, Directed by David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

The film True stories runs with the album True Stories resulting in an awesome, and very funny social commentary. It is one of my lifetime goals to make a film of this nature. It certainly is something that could be seen more.

Keep on reading Cowboys and Cowgirls. There are interviews on the way with important people!

Yaaaahhhh Cowboy, Yahhhhhh
